What is World Alzheimer’s Day?
On September 21st each year, there is a focus on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Whilst World Alzheimer’s Day now has more of an impact, the stigmatization and misinformation that surrounds dementia is still a problem.
What is Alzheimer’s?
Alzeimer’s is a progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age, caused by generalized degeneration of the brain, often leading to the onset of dementia.
Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged, for example, by Alzheimer’s or a series of strokes. It can cause memory disorders, personality changes and impaired reasoning.
Dementia – What are the symptoms?
• Loss of memory
• Changes in behavior
• Difficulty in communicating
• Aggressive behavior – verbally or physically
• Loss of sight and hearing
• Hallucinations
• Spending long periods of time walking around
• Disturbed sleep
• Depression and anxiety
