Terence Higgins Trust assist Hollyoaks with HIV storyline

Hollyoaks is working with HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust on a storyline that will see Ste Hay diagnosed as HIV positive – the first time a British soap has featured a gay character living with HIV.

Following a night of unprotected sex with a stranger, Ste will test positive for the virus. The long-running storyline will follow him as he manages the condition and will show the effect it has on his marriage, children and his physical and psychological well-being.

Will Harris, Head of Media at Terence Higgins Trust, said: “We always say that a well-researched, well-told storyline in a national soap is worth any number of health campaigns, especially for a stigmatised condition like HIV. It is important because currently whole generations of young gay men are entering adulthood without the confidence they need to negotiate healthy sex and relationships.

Due to loss of some of our funding we were no longer able to afford to remain in our current office space. This meant staff were losing their office and meeting space, with no alternative place to work.
